Looked it up; didn't realize Francis had alcohol & drug issues, so I retract him as my comp of choice.

The only true comp can be a guy with no apparent problems suddenly dropping out of the league... Cedric Ceballos?

Thanks Jacob. Francis is a good comp, though I think he did have some knee issues, so I left him out.

Great story, I had no idea Murdock was this good. Reminds you of the inefficiencies in coaching before advanced stats existed.

Isn't Steve Francis a vaguely similar tale? Budding star, traded, unmotivated, found unfit, out of the league by 30. While I'm sure he could have contributed in the right role.

Comment on NBA Draft: Michael Carter-Williams by Jacob

Good writeup. You opened my eyes for the bigger picture regarding Carter-Williams: poor shooter or not, his skill set fits right in with nearly every roster, because you can never have enough passing and defense. So yes, I'm convinced he'll have a long career with several deep postseason runs, even if he'll never average more than 10 points per game.

But he'll have to start by being a disappointment, I agree, because he will be more like a glue guy than a star. I think he would do wonders next to a shoot-first combo guard, and I think Charlotte, Detroit and Sacramento should seriously consider drafting him.

Just out of curiosity: did Rajon Rondo come close to the benchmarks outlined in your article?

Excellent write up. I'm more optimistic than you and feel pretty confident that Burke will be a capable starter.

Interestingly, James Brocato's statistical analysis has Burke as the 7th best point guard prospect of the last 10 years: http://shutupandjam.net/2013/03/21/some-past-results/

[...] I’m going to start the 2013 draft previews with the PGs and work my way from the perimeter to the bigs. Burke is the Wooden award winner and possibly the top PG available, so he seems like a good player to start the 2013 analyses with. With Marcus Smart going back to school Burke is generally considered the top PG out there. He led Michigan into the championship game and that boosted him from the fringes of the lottery into the top 5 in most mocks. David Thorpe at ESPN (insider) made the case for Burke as the top overall pick. Even the overly contrarian and stat-focused Ed Weiland got briefly swept up in the Trey Burke frenzy, placing Burke 3rd overall in his post-Tournament top 60. [...]

Danm, Marcus Smart, Gary Harris, Glenn Robinson II, and Mitch McGary all going back to college. The 2013 draft loses a bit of depth.
