		<description>I agree that SVG was dealt a raw hand and he likely tried to deal with this matter privately.  In this case, though, Van Gundy wasn&#039;t really the story publicly until he went public and kind of usurped his own authority.  He definitely deserves better but the writing is on the wall.</description>

		<description>Jeff Van Gundy, asked about this incident while announcing a game the next day, suggested that his brother&#039;s motive was to bring the whole incident out into the open so it would stop being a distraction to concentrating on winning games.  

Personally, I would not fire SVG, I would have met with Howard and separately with the rest of the players and explain that it is their job to listen to the coach and if they fail to do so, he has free reign to bench, fine, or suspend any of you - including Howard.  I would have done that before it got to the point where it became the problem it is.  

NBA stars are of much less value if they refuse to go along with a good coach&#039;s wishes.  That&#039;s the main problem for the Knicks - the owner consistently makes clear the star players are more valuable than the coach, removing all of the coaches&#039; authority.</description>
