Are Porzingis and Hezonja Worthy Top 10 Draftees?

June 3, 2015 by Ed Weiland 1 Comment

Before I get to the top 2 foreign prospects I wanted to show some history of players who came to the NBA from a foreign league vs. players from American college and high schools over the past 14 drafts. That takes it back to the 1998 draft when Dirk Nowitzki became the first player to be drafted in the top 10 from a foreign league. The chart below shows the success percentage of American and foreign players drafted top 10 from the 14 drafts after from ’98 to ’11. I stopped at 2011, because we … [Read more...] about Are Porzingis and Hezonja Worthy Top 10 Draftees?

2015 NBA Draft: Justise Winslow

June 1, 2015 by Ed Weiland 7 Comments

I find Justise Winslow one of the most intriguing prospects available in the 2015 NBA draft. He started his freshman year slowly, eclipsed by not only a stellar crop of freshmen centers. As a perimeter player he was behind the likes of D’Angelo Russell and Stanley Johnson.  He was the 3rd most visible freshman on the Duke team, behind Okafor and Jones. His start was OK, but nothing really worth noting. Through the non-conference schedule the assessment would have been: Decent start. Let’s see … [Read more...] about 2015 NBA Draft: Justise Winslow

The NBA Draft Lottery and Luck

May 19, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Like life itself the NBA Draft Lottery is random, painful and wonderful. It will remain as such unless they adopt that stupid wheel. This piece looks at what teams have been lucky and/or unlucky in the lottery during its 30 years of existence. What I’m looking at is which teams have had the ball bounce their way the most during the lottery era and which teams just can’t catch a break. What the list below shows is how much each team moved up or down in the draft order during the 30 years of … [Read more...] about The NBA Draft Lottery and Luck

The 2015 Draft: Poker Night For Rebuilding Teams

April 21, 2015 by mediadiscovery Leave a Comment

The NBA Playoffs are off to a pretty great start. In the East, Derrick Rose looks like his tremendous old self, LeBron's young Cavs teammates had stellar playoff debuts, and a nation that largely ignores the Hawks is finally seeing just how beautifully they play. In the West, the Warriors and Pelicans are putting on a show with Anthony Davis loudly announcing himself as the future of the league, and the Spurs are battling the Clippers in what Grantland's Zach Lowe calls "The Last Ride Of The … [Read more...] about The 2015 Draft: Poker Night For Rebuilding Teams

2015 NBA Draft Top 60 Post Tournament

April 9, 2015 by Ed Weiland 1 Comment

The 2015 draft has the potential to be one of the best ever. The 2015 class features the most impressive group of bigs in a long time, possibly since Shaq and Alonzo in ’93. The PG and PF classes are also deep. I have omitted all players who have announced plans to return to school for the 2016 season. Players are listed in order of how I would draft them, all other things being equal. Karl Anthony Towns, C Kentucky: I like both top centers a lot, but Towns has the edge because he’s more … [Read more...] about 2015 NBA Draft Top 60 Post Tournament

NBA Draft 2015: Top 60

February 25, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The story of the 2015 draft will be the centers. The 2015 draft is deep with quality bigs. This has the potential to become one of the great center classes ever. Right now I have 7 in the lottery and 4 more in the first round. There are several other freshmen centers of moderate promise out there and a few seniors who would be great 2nd round picks. This is welcome news for an NBA that currently has a lot of talent but is lacking in quality bigs. The way this top 60 played out I have the … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2015: Top 60
