The Kawhi Affair and Circumstantial Evidence

September 14, 2025 by Harlan Schreiber

As the Kawhi Leonard salary cap evasion situation continues to spiral out of control, I thought this would be an appropriate time to take a step back and address some of the issues that arise from this unique situation.   What are the facts of the Kawhi Situation?   It seems that we don’t know all the facts for sure but here is a basic recap:   Pablo Torre provided a detailed report that showed that, in April 2022, Kawhi got a $28 million endorsement from a … [Read more...] about The Kawhi Affair and Circumstantial Evidence

Is The NBA Broken?

December 28, 2024 by Harlan Schreiber

Let’s get into the topic du jour…..ratings and the NBA.  As has been pointed out widely, recent reports show that NBA television ratings are down 19-25%, which is a larger proportional dip then the general decline in television viewership.  This trend has made the usual criticisms of the NBA more acute.  While I usually don’t write about the popular to do in NBA circles, I can’t help but wade into the current controversy about whether the NBA game needs some fixes.  Let’s do … [Read more...] about Is The NBA Broken?

A Closer Look at Load Management

January 30, 2023 by Harlan Schreiber

Each year, NBA teams rest players more and more, particularly in road games, under the concept of load management.  The teams have shown great reluctance to play their stars (and even some non-star players) despite the fact that the players have no apparent injuries.  The most recent example comes from the Lakers, who will sit Anthony Davis and LeBron James in Brooklyn, even though they were off the prior day. The teams insist that they are taking reasonable steps to protect their … [Read more...] about A Closer Look at Load Management

March 7, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

The 1995 All-Star game led to two of the oddest picks, in retrospect, in All-Star history, Dana Barros and Tyrone Hill.  Barros was a 27-year old 5’11 three-point specialist.  Hill was a generic starting power forward.  How did two average(ish) role player become All-Stars and did they have any argument to make the team?  The cases for Hill and Barros were separate and distinct but the overarching theme arises from the weird Generation X kerfuffle that enveloped the NBA at … [Read more...] about The Most Random All-Stars: Dana Barros and Tyrone Hill

December 18, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

On December 1, 2020, Pete Croatto released, “From Hang Time to Prime Time: Business, Entertainment, and the Birth of the Modern-Day NBA.”   The book is a fascinating behind the scene looks about how the NBA went from a business teetering on the brink of bankruptcy in 1970s to a billion-dollar industry that dominates entertainment.  Pete dug deep into the ascendancy and spoke with scores of players, coaches, executives, and people who happened to be around to witness the stages of … [Read more...] about Q&A With Pete Croatto on From Hang Time to Prime Time, David Stern, the Wild 1980s, and More
