Revisiting The Mavericks’ Three Js (Kidd, Jackson & Mashburn)

December 1, 2024 by Harlan Schreiber

In November 1994, roughly 30 years ago, the Mavericks debuted the famous “Three Js” lineup consisting of smooth scoring shooting guard Jimmy Jackson, shot happy small forward Jamal Mashburn, and exciting rookie point guard Jason Kidd.  The trio with the flashy nickname and flashy games captured the imagination of fans before quickly flaming out due to a variety of factors, most notably personality clashes between the three stars that may or may not have involved a love triangle with singer … [Read more...] about Revisiting The Mavericks’ Three Js (Kidd, Jackson & Mashburn)

End of KD/Kyrie Era FAQ

February 13, 2023 by Harlan Schreiber

Well, I’ve put it off as long as I could but it’s time to touch on the end of the Kevin Durant/Kyrie Irving Era in Brooklyn.  This is not exactly new territory and it seems that the consensus is that, while there is much blame to go around, the largest share lies with Kyrie and his frequent flair for controversy.  I largely agree with that assessment but I thought we could do a quick examination of the end of this partnership, FAQ style, and hopefully touch on some issues that haven’t … [Read more...] about End of KD/Kyrie Era FAQ

Revisiting the Kidd-Marbury Trade

August 21, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

Today, the Nets are at the center of the NBA universe.  They are laden with megastars and the odds-on favorite to win an NBA title.  As we are deep in the off-season, I thought it would be a good time to revisit the recent 20th anniversary of one of the Nets’ most famous trades: the dealing of Stephon Marbury to Phoenix for Jason Kidd.  The basic story is well-remembered: Kidd turned around a terrible Nets team and brought them to back-to-back Finals in 2001-02 and 2002-03 and … [Read more...] about Revisiting the Kidd-Marbury Trade

Playoff Quick Thoughts (East Edition)

May 29, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

We missed a formal playoff preview this year so, instead, let’s jump into some quick thoughts for each playoff series and do our usual feature about the last time each team met in the playoffs.  Today, we will do the East today and the West shortly after…. -76ers v. Wizards:  As anticipated, the 76ers handled the Wiz relatively easily at home (Game 1 was competitive but Game 2 was decidedly not).  The 76ers stars have been dominant and Tobias Harris’ great start bodes well for … [Read more...] about Playoff Quick Thoughts (East Edition)

Steve Nash and Newbie Coaches

September 13, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

How do we assess the Steve Nash hire in Brooklyn?  Nash was a great and smart player but he has no direct coaching experience.  By Nash’s own admission, he jumped the line due to his great playing career.  Is that fair?  There are a couple issues to unwrap here.  Let’s delve into a few of them: Does Nash’s getting a coaching gig under these circumstances constitute white privilege? Before getting into a long conversation as to the term white privilege and when it’s … [Read more...] about Steve Nash and Newbie Coaches

Quick Thoughts

February 16, 2008 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

1.    Kidd Stuff:    What initially seemed like a very interesting deal between the Nets and Mavericks now appears close to dead.  The deal as originally constituted looks like this:  Nets Get: Devin Harris (heart of the deal.  Harris is locked into a long-term extension and is only 25). Jerry Stackhouse (reportedly would be bought out immediately and would re-sign with Dallas--though David Stern doesn't like that plan). DeSagana Diop: (not a bad backup center but is more in the deal … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts
