2016 NBA Draft: Top 60

February 10, 2016 by Ed Weiland 1 Comment

The 2016 draft should be an interesting one. At the top are Ingram and Simmons in some order that I have yet to determine. After those 2 there are a couple of groups that both intrigue. The first is the young bigs. These are freshmen and sophomore centers and PFs who have flashed a lot of potential, but still have enough flaws that a lot of bust potential is there. The next group is seniors who are outperforming their previous career numbers so well that they have forced themselves into the … [Read more...] about 2016 NBA Draft: Top 60

NBA Draft 2016: Top 60

January 7, 2016 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The narrative of the 2016 draft is starting to form. Right now this looks like a so-so draft with one great talent at the top. As is the case every year with my first draft preview the players are in tiers as opposed to a strict 1-60 rating of the prospects. I’ll have an updated top 60 in a month when conference play starts to separate the wheat from the chaff. Top Three Ben Simmons, PF LSU: With Simmons there’s no reason to not believe the hype so far. He’s one of the best rebounders in … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2016: Top 60

2015 Draft Grades

June 26, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This is a difficult draft to grade. Because it has excellent depth, but no clear superstar I wanted to give a couple As and a couple Fs while all the other teams get a C+. There are only 5 teams whose draft I look at and say, “That was a disaster.” But my MO has always been to grade on a curve, awarding 3 As and Fs, 6 Bs and Ds and 12 Cs and that’s what I’ll continue to do. That’s also why I’m praising some of the teams I graded D. I try to grade based on how the team helped themselves more … [Read more...] about 2015 Draft Grades

2015 NBA Draft: Final Top 60

June 25, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2015 draft should be a pretty good one. As a historical comp, I see this one turning out like the 1970 draft. That draft was loaded with good, but not great centers and produced 12 all-stars. I like Towns and Winslow as the top 2. Both have the same high upside/low bust combination. The top 10 all look pretty solid. Porzingis is the high upside mystery. After that the next 20-25 picks offer solid value. In the 2nd round things drop off quite a bit. This list reflects how I would draft … [Read more...] about 2015 NBA Draft: Final Top 60

2015 NBA Draft: Ranking the Centers

June 25, 2015 by Ed Weiland 1 Comment

There haven’t been a lot of good, deep center classes in the history of the NBA draft. The last draft with multiple all-stars at center was 2007 with Horford, Noah and Gasol. Before that it was 1992 with Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning. Before that it goes back to 1970 when HOFers Bob Lanier, Dave Cowens and Dan Issel all came into the game, along with the solid Sam Lacey. The 2015 draft has the potential to join this group. That will be a great thing for a league that’s starving for some … [Read more...] about 2015 NBA Draft: Ranking the Centers

2015 NBA Draft: Ranking the PGs

June 24, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

In a league full of solid PGs the 2015 class looks like it will add some good one to the group. In addition to the 2 young phenoms, Russell and Mudiay, there are a lot of 5th-year senior I find myself liking this year. The PG benchmarks are .500 2PP, 18.0 P40, 5.0 A40, 1.4 S40, 6.0 RSB40, 1.4 A/TO and some 3-point ability. These aren’t as strict for freshmen and sophomores as they are for juniors and seniors. Here are the numbers. Players are listed in order of how I would draft them all … [Read more...] about 2015 NBA Draft: Ranking the PGs
