2016 NBA Draft Grades

June 24, 2016 by Ed Weiland 2 Comments

One thing that became crystal clear early in the 2016 NBA Draft is PFs with 3-point range are much more coveted and PFs without such skills need not apply. Players with a lesser defensive/rebounding skill set than Andrea Bargnini brought 10 years ago were being gobbled up with early picks. I thought this run on stretch 4s was crazy and will end badly for the teams involved, but I could be a dinosaur in my thinking. I was most impressed with teams that just stood pat with their picks and … [Read more...] about 2016 NBA Draft Grades

2016 NBA Draft: Final Top 60

I like the talent in the 2016 NBA draft, but I think if one cared enough to check that is something I have said about every draft. The strength of this draft is in the bigs. Both the PF and Center positions are deep, though there is much more star power in the PFs. This could be problematic in a league that’s going small. Every year I try to dredge up a past draft that this one might look like in 10 years. The one that looks similar is ’95. That one featured PFs as 8 of the first 12 picks. … [Read more...] about 2016 NBA Draft: Final Top 60

2016 NBA Draft: Power Forwards

June 23, 2016 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This is the strongest group in the 2016 draft by far. There is star power and depth here. This n=bunch of PFs could even turn the 2016 draft into one of the better drafts of the decade. Power Forwards 2PP 3PP P40 R40 A/TO SB40 Ben Simmons 561 333 20.9 12.8 1.4 3.0 Skal Labissiere 521 0 16.6 7.9 0.3 4.8 Domatas Sabonis 621 357 22.5 15.2 0.7 1.4 Deyonta Davis 598 0 16.5 12.1 0.9 4.6 Dragan … [Read more...] about 2016 NBA Draft: Power Forwards

2016 NBA Draft: The PGs

June 23, 2016 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

I’m not crazy about this class of PGs. Dunn looks like a good one, but after that the young guys aren’t very impressive and the older players come with the usual old guy baggage. Point Guards 2PP 3PP P40 A40 S40 A/TO RSB40 Kris Dunn 477 372 19.5 7.4 3.0 1.8 10.0 Denzel Valentine 481 444 24.0 9.7 1.3 2.8 11.0 Gary Payton II 520 314 18.8 5.9 3.0 2.2 12.8 Wade Baldwin 437 406 18.6 6.9 1.6 1.9 7.3 Alex … [Read more...] about 2016 NBA Draft: The PGs

2016 NBA Draft: The Centers

June 22, 2016 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

I like this crop of centers a lot. I also have to say that I’m not sure what exactly the future of the center position is. Teams still need rim protectors and inside scoring is always useful. But the 2 top teams played the finals without a traditional center. Such a thing used to be unheard of in the NBA where an all-star center was a necessary piece for any team with title aspirations. That said, as analysts we have to proceed as if centers and the inside presence they bring on both ends of … [Read more...] about 2016 NBA Draft: The Centers

NBA Draft: The Shooting Guards

June 21, 2016 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2016 SG field is pretty mediocre as draft subgroups go. We have the potential star in Hield, the frosh phenoms in Murray and Beasley, a few intriguing prospects with issues, young players too erratic to be taken seriously, old players who finally arrived as prospects and a few guys worth a flyer as a UFA. Basically it’s the usual suspects. Here are the pace adjusted numbers: Shooting Guards 2PP 3PP P40 S40 A/TO RSB40 Buddy Hield 548 460 27.4 1.2 0.7 8.1 Jamal … [Read more...] about NBA Draft: The Shooting Guards
