Miami/Boston and ECF Game 7s

May 29, 2022 by Harlan Schreiber

1.            We’ve Got a Game 7!: While these payoffs have had some fun moments, we haven’t really had any epic series.  The two Game 7s we have had (Boston/Milwaukee and Dallas/Phoenix) were blow outs.  I’m moderately hopeful that tonight’s Boston/Miami Game 7 could get us the epic Game 7 we all want a la Milwaukee/Brooklyn last year.    What should we expect from a Game 7 here?  Well, the series has been a … [Read more...] about Miami/Boston and ECF Game 7s

NBA Finals 2019-2020 Preview

September 30, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

Bubble Ball really is different.  The Miami Heat, a pretty solid team, has thoroughly dispatched two teams, who seemed much better on paper.  Can they do it again?  The honest answer is I don’t see it but I didn’t see them smacking around the Bucks, so what do I know?  Generally, Vegas agrees with this take.  Odds makers already have the Lakers as five-point favorites in Game 1 and the general bend seems to be in favor of LeBron James and Los Angeles.  Putting all … [Read more...] about NBA Finals 2019-2020 Preview

Eastern Conference Finals Preview: Celtics/Heat

September 15, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

In the season that has lasted forever, we are finally to the Eastern Conference Finals.  Oddly, the teams playing are the three seed (Boston) and the five seed (Miami).  As an initial note, it looks like Boston is the slight favorite, even though the Heat is 8-1 in the playoffs, and convincingly beaten the best team in the NBA last round.   Shouldn’t Miami’s excellent play in the bubble mean something more?  Maybe.  I thought we could breakdown the series and see … [Read more...] about Eastern Conference Finals Preview: Celtics/Heat

2015 Draft Grades

June 26, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This is a difficult draft to grade. Because it has excellent depth, but no clear superstar I wanted to give a couple As and a couple Fs while all the other teams get a C+. There are only 5 teams whose draft I look at and say, “That was a disaster.” But my MO has always been to grade on a curve, awarding 3 As and Fs, 6 Bs and Ds and 12 Cs and that’s what I’ll continue to do. That’s also why I’m praising some of the teams I graded D. I try to grade based on how the team helped themselves more … [Read more...] about 2015 Draft Grades

The NBA Draft Lottery and Luck

May 19, 2015 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Like life itself the NBA Draft Lottery is random, painful and wonderful. It will remain as such unless they adopt that stupid wheel. This piece looks at what teams have been lucky and/or unlucky in the lottery during its 30 years of existence. What I’m looking at is which teams have had the ball bounce their way the most during the lottery era and which teams just can’t catch a break. What the list below shows is how much each team moved up or down in the draft order during the 30 years of … [Read more...] about The NBA Draft Lottery and Luck
