Draft 2013: Top Shooting Guards

June 7, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The NBA has gone through a dry spell when it comes to young SGs.  Since Dwyane Wade came into the league in 2003, Brandon Roy and James Harden have been the only SGs to make a major impact and Roy’s career ended prematurely. That could change this year. The 2013 draft features 3 of the better SG prospects I’ve seen in a few years. Victor Oladipo, Ben McLemore and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope all enter the draft with solid prospect numbers, but also some bust potential. McLemore has been at the top … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: Top Shooting Guards

NBA Draft 2013: The Lesser PGs

May 21, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

I already took a look at Trey Burke and Michael Carter-Williams, who are the top two PG prospects this year. My next piece after this one will cover a trio of small college guards, CJ McCollum, Nate Wolters and Ray McCallum, who I wanted to look at separately. This group is what you might call the lesser PGs. These players have shown enough for a mention, but come up short as prospects. These are the type of prospects with whom I have to pick through stats to convince myself they’re serious … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2013: The Lesser PGs

NBA Draft 2013: Top 60

February 7, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2013 draft is shaping up as a pretty good draft overall. The strength is centers, which is a great thing as the NBA is in a perpetual shortage of quality big men. It also means the draft is going to be top heavy in big men, because they’re more valuable players. The draft will be similar to 2012 in that there is one guy who stands out, followed by a muddled group starting at #2. Like last year the top guy is a freshman center playing for Kentucky. The important thing is that while Anthony … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2013: Top 60

NBA Draft: Is Cody Zeller Worth the Hype?

November 12, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

There’s a lot of hype surrounding Cody Zeller. He’s the college hoops pre-season cover boy for Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Mag. A look at the mocks suggests he’s considered one of the top prospects in the nation. Zeller is pretty much a fixture in the top 5, along with Noel, Muhammad and McAdoo. The mocks will change as the season progresses. Some players will fade and others will emerge. This happens every year and 2013 seems set for more fluidity than usual, due to the abnormally large … [Read more...] about NBA Draft: Is Cody Zeller Worth the Hype?

NBA Draft 2013: Early Look at the Centers

August 30, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

It’s another typical group of centers for the 2013 draft. At least that’s how I would describe the returning players. The freshmen could actually be something special. The reason is there are so many highly-rated centers in the 2012 recruiting class. Five of the top 8 players and 11 of the top 40 are listed as centers. That’s way out of the norm. The previous 5 classes had 5 centers total in the top 8 and never more than 7 in the top 40 in any one year. So the 2013 incoming freshmen center class … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2013: Early Look at the Centers

Draft 2013: Early look at the top PGs

August 3, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2013 PG class looks a little thin right now. There is no returning player who looks like a sure thing as a prospect and the incoming freshman class, which isn’t included here, looks weak. The class was hurt more when TJ McConnell, who may have been the top returning PG prospect, transferred from Duquense to Arizona and will sit out the year because of it. He’s one to keep in mind as a bust out star for 2014 though. Back to the present, there are three that rate above the crowd going into … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: Early look at the top PGs
