Draft 2013: Early Look at the SGs

August 14, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

If the PG class of 2013 is a little weak, the returning SG class looks downright anemic. I expect this to change. I expect an upper classmen or three will emerge out of nowhere. I also feel one or two freshmen will sparkle, as usually is the case. But right now there just isn’t a lot to see in the world of SG prospects. The returning players all have some work to do on their games and the foreign SGs also look weak at first glance. The returning group is a mix of sophomores trying to build on … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: Early Look at the SGs

Draft 2013: Early look at the top PGs

August 3, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2013 PG class looks a little thin right now. There is no returning player who looks like a sure thing as a prospect and the incoming freshman class, which isn’t included here, looks weak. The class was hurt more when TJ McConnell, who may have been the top returning PG prospect, transferred from Duquense to Arizona and will sit out the year because of it. He’s one to keep in mind as a bust out star for 2014 though. Back to the present, there are three that rate above the crowd going into … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: Early look at the top PGs

NBA Draft 2012: Grades

June 29, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This draft is Anthony Davis followed by a whole lot of meh. There’s a lot of journeyman depth. There are a lot of decent prospects, but few good ones. For that reason the 2012 draft is a tough one to evaluate and grade. There will be some players who develop into rotation regulars and even stars though and I’m going to try and sort that out right here. I grade on a curve. There will be 3 A’s, 6 B’s, 12 C’s, 6 D’s and 3 F’s. Grades are given based mainly on how much each team used their 2012 … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2012: Grades

NBA Draft 2012: Top 60 (Not a mock draft)

June 27, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This is not a mock draft. Mocks suggest some inside knowledge of how the draft will transpire. I have no such knowledge other than what I might read here and there. This is the order of how I would draft this group of players. This is an incredibly difficult bunch to rank after the top pick. After Davis every player has major concerns and isn’t a guy I’d want in the top 2-10 of most drafts. What this draft does have going for it is what I’ll call journeyman depth. There will be players … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2012: Top 60 (Not a mock draft)

NBA Draft 2012: Centers

June 26, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The evaluation of the centers plays out something like the PFs. There are benchmarks that should be met before I consider them good prospects. There are exceptions and I’ll get into those as they apply. The main thing to know is the 2PP should be over .600, the R40 over 10.0 and the B40 over 3.0. Those are minimum numbers. The better prospects should do better in every category. Scoring frequently is nice, but not as important as it is with the other position. Possessing a 3-point shot and good … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2012: Centers

NBA Draft2012: Anthony Davis

June 25, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

I’m going to look at Anthony Davis with the idea that he’s going to play more center than PF, even though he’s listed as a PF. He’s over 6’10” in shoes and has a 7’5” wingspan. He has little in the way of a perimeter game and his main skill is blocking shots. All those things add up to Anthony Davis playing more center than PF. The only issue would be his slight frame. At 222 lb he’ll have to add some weight. Because he’s young and has already handled a legendary growth spurt with little, if … [Read more...] about NBA Draft2012: Anthony Davis
