Transactions: The Jimmy Butler Trade

November 10, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Timberwolves trade Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton to 76ers for Robert Covington, Dario Saris, Jerryd Bayless, and a 2020 second-round pick The craptastic stare down between Minnesota and Butler is finally over and it leaves all sorts of lingering questions for us to consider.  Let’s run down the issues…. -Was this trade good for Minnesota? It was clear that Butler had to go but to answer this question we’d have to be privy to the market for Butler.  If the rumors were true that Houston … [Read more...] about Transactions: The Jimmy Butler Trade

On Hot Starts

October 30, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

I chose to skip the conventional NBA preview because there is not a ton to say about the outcome of the 2018-19 season.  The Warriors are prohibitive favorites and there is no apparent rival on equal footing at this point.  This is not to say that such a rival might not emerge or that the Warriors’ dominance is a bad thing.  Still, drama is low. Instead, I wanted to do a quick walkthrough of hot starts.  Currently, Milwaukee Bucks are 7-0 and, statistically, the class of the NBA (a 16.36 … [Read more...] about On Hot Starts

Udonis and Franchise Lifers

September 30, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago, Udonis Haslem accepted a relatively modest one-year deal to return to the Heat for his 16th (and presumably final) NBA season.  Haslem represents a rarity—an NBA player who has played his entire long career for a single franchise.  U told ESPN that his longevity and exclusively Miami Heat-based career has significant meaning to him: “It's about my love for the organization and my love for the guys.  It wasn't about me. If I was looking for playing time, I could have gone … [Read more...] about Udonis and Franchise Lifers

The Mitch Richmond FAQ

September 12, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

During the 1990s, Mitch Richmond was one of my favorite players.  He was a big strong two-guard who could hit the three or overpower guards in the post.  I hadn’t thought much about Richmond the last few years but he has been thrust into the spotlight again because of nostalgia about his Run TMC days and his recent election to the Hall of Fame.  Was Richmond really a Hall of Famer?   Let’s take a deep dive: Richmond’s College Career Richmond spent two years in a junior college before … [Read more...] about The Mitch Richmond FAQ

The Run TMC FAQ

August 23, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Golden State Warriors attempted to compete with a fun, high scoring, perimeter-oriented team, affectionately nicknamed Run TMC, a pun on the popular old rap group Run DMC.  In this case the, “TMC” represented  T(im Hardaway), M(itch Richmond), and C(hris Mullin).  Hardaway, Richmond, and Mullin all scored over 22.9 ppg in 1990-91.  This fun team scored a lot of points and even upset a much higher ranked Spurs team in the 1990-91 playoffs.   Right before the … [Read more...] about The Run TMC FAQ

Transactions, Free Agency 2018 Edition

July 5, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Most of the big moves are done for NBA Summer 2018, so let’s take stock at the most interesting ones so far… Golden State Warriors Sign DeMarcus Cousins Certainly DMC can really help the Warriors if he’s healthy but this is not the seminal moment where the NBA needs to declare Golden State in violation of antitrust law.  The facts are pretty clear….Cousins was not someone that teams wanted to invest in when he was healthy because of his volatile temper.  The Kings’ return for Cousins … [Read more...] about Transactions, Free Agency 2018 Edition
