NBA Finals 2022-23 Wrap Up: Ranking Jokic

June 16, 2023 by Harlan Schreiber

The Nuggets impressive post season run really cements Nikola Jokic in the conversation as an all-time great.  Sure, Jokic was a Hall of Famer even before the 2022-23 season started but there is nothing like a title to get consensus from the guys in the back row.  Let’s delve into a few details of the title run, FAQ style… How impressive was Denver’s run? Denver went 16-4 and was clearly dominant this post season.  Only two other teams in the last two decades have won a title … [Read more...] about NBA Finals 2022-23 Wrap Up: Ranking Jokic

NBA Finals Preview 2022-23

June 1, 2023 by Harlan Schreiber

Another year, another new Finals match up.  The Nuggets against the Heat feels broadly like the 1998-99 Finals redux, where the top seeded Spurs, led by emerging star Tim Duncan played an eight seeded Knicks team that was clearly better than its low seed and featured Latrell Sprewell and Marcus Camby.   In this case, the Nuggets and Nikola Jokic play the role of the Spurs and Duncan.  Like the Spurs, Denver has a great young big man hoping to lead his ABA team to a first NBA … [Read more...] about NBA Finals Preview 2022-23

Playoff Quick Thoughts (West Edition)

May 31, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

Let’s continue with Part 2 of our First Round review, the Western Conference (Part 1 can be found here)…. -Jazz v. Grizzlies:  The Grizzlies have hung tough but are down 2-1, despite shocking the Jazz by beating top seeded Utah in the first game.  That got me wondering how often a top NBA seed has dropped Game 1 of a First Round series and what happened thereafter.  We will limit the inquiry a bit to span from 2002-03, when the NBA changed the First Round to the seven game … [Read more...] about Playoff Quick Thoughts (West Edition)

2020-21 MVP Picks

May 10, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

Who is the 2020-21 NBA MVP?  Usually, there is not much controversy and the best player seems apparent to most fans/voters.  Specifically, the MVP is usually the best player on the best team.  That’s the nice thing about the NBA, the best players historically are on the best teams.  There were times when strong narratives regarding nice stories (i.e. Allen Iverson 2000-01) or shear voter fatigue (see Jordan, Michael) changed the vote but, for the most part, it has held.  … [Read more...] about 2020-21 MVP Picks

NBA 2020-21 Awards So Far

February 22, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

As we approach the halfway point of the season, I thought this would be good time to do awards picks for the season that has been so far.  Granted a lot could change but let’s jump in and take a look: MVP:  Before the season, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, and Giannis Antetokounmpo were the safe bets.  They were the best players for the three likely best teams.  They have all been very good so far but Nikola Jokic has been even better.  Jokic leads the NBA in most … [Read more...] about NBA 2020-21 Awards So Far

Playoff Quick Thoughts

August 18, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

We made it through the seeding round and now we have actual playoffs!  The playoffs, like everything else in the Bubble, will feel slightly unsatisfying but still much, much better than nothing.  The playoff predictions we made pre-Bubble (Bucks over Clippers) still hold in my mind.  Instead of running through the predictions again, thought we could dig through some quick observations that were on my mind… -Dallas’ O:  Yes, Dallas had the best offensive rating off All-Time … [Read more...] about Playoff Quick Thoughts
