NBA Playoffs 2025-26 Quick Thoughts

April 18, 2026 by Harlan Schreiber

The playoffs are here again, and it’s time to examine some of the key questions that stand out—FAQ style…. Yes, the Oklahoma City Thunder are favorites, but are they prohibitive favorites? OKC lapped the field again, going 64–18 despite some key injuries and a general sense that they eased up after their amazing start. Their 2024–25 squad had the best SRS ever.  This team ranks “only” sixth best in NBA history. For a little context, here are the top ten SRS teams and how they fared in the … [Read more...] about NBA Playoffs 2025-26 Quick Thoughts

Revisiting Wilt’s Knee Injury Comeback

March 7, 2026 by Harlan Schreiber

Last night, ten months after a catastrophic Achilles injury, Jayson Tatum made his amazing return to the court.  He put up 15 points, 12 boards, and 7 assists in only 27 minutes.  While it is premature to say Tatum is totally back to pre-injury form, early returns are quite encouraging.  In our current argumentative culture, the question came up whether this return is the most impressive return from major injury.   I’m agnostic on this question but it did inspire me to go back and … [Read more...] about Revisiting Wilt’s Knee Injury Comeback

Wilt’s 100-Point Game Revisited

March 4, 2023 by Harlan Schreiber

On March 2nd we passed the 61st anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game against the Knicks.  The 100-pointer has been a very well-covered event by plenty of books (notably “Tall Tales” by Terry Pluto and “Wilt” by Robert Cherry) and articles looking into most of its nooks and crannies.  I thought we could dig a little deeper and see if we could find a few more interesting tidbits.  Before doing so, let’s go over some of the basics: -Wilt scored 100 against a bad and … [Read more...] about Wilt’s 100-Point Game Revisited

PJ Tucker and Adventures in Low Usage

December 24, 2022 by Harlan Schreiber

1.  Adventures In Low Usage, PJ Tucker:  Despite the high powered offensive era in which the NBA currently operates, PJ Tucker stubbornly refuses to shoot.  Currently, Tucker has started all 31 games he has played and racked up 28.5 mpg, yet he is averaging only 3.1 shots per game, which yields a miniscule 6.5% usage rate.  His shot creation is absurdly low: 100% of his baskets so far have been assisted.  Tucker’s other advanced stats are pretty gross as well: 5.0 PER, … [Read more...] about PJ Tucker and Adventures in Low Usage

2021-22 NBA Finals Preview

June 2, 2022 by Harlan Schreiber

Celtics/Warriors is a particularly interesting matchup for the NBA Finals on many levels.  Let’s breakdown some of the facts that caught my attention…. Ancient History Between Celtics and Warriors It has little relevance to the current squads but the Celtics and the old Warriors had quite an interesting rivalry while Wilt Chamberlain was with the Philly/Golden State franchise.  Wilt had little luck actually beating Bill Russell during that time but here’s the breakdown of their … [Read more...] about 2021-22 NBA Finals Preview

Examining the 50-Point Explosions

March 26, 2022 by Harlan Schreiber

March 2022 has featured eight 50-point games so far.  According to NBA.com, this month has had the most 50-point games since there were nine in December 1962 (six by Wilt Chamberlain and three by Elgin Baylor).  In the early 1960s, with the fast pace and the existence of Wilt, 50-point games were quite commonplace.  But now we have seen 50-point games emerge more often and, sometimes, from more random players like Saddiq Bey, a good player but quite surprising 50-point guy.  … [Read more...] about Examining the 50-Point Explosions
