Linsanity Revisited

March 7, 2022 by Harlan Schreiber

Roughly ten years ago, on February 4, 2012, Jeremy Lin came off the bench to lead the Knicks to win against the New Jersey Nets.  Lin, who had not previously played more than six minutes one time all year, had 25 points and 7 assists in 36 minutes.  This spurred a 25-game run where Lin was ignited to instant stardom before more weirdness ensued.  Now, Linsanity is remembered for that fun run but few actually delve into what happened and whether it could have or should have turned out … [Read more...] about Linsanity Revisited

Are the Knicks for Real?

April 25, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

With a relatively easy victory over the Raptors yesterday, the Knicks have now won nine straight and sit tenuously in the fourth seed at 34-27.  Naturally, New York is aflutter over the Knicks playing meaningful games in April and generally appearing to be a competent organization.  Let’s look at the Knicks and how real this turnaround is… What exactly are the 2020-21 Knicks? They are the 2020-21 version of the old Jeff Van Gundy Knicks, a slow paced/defensive squad.  Tom Thibodeau … [Read more...] about Are the Knicks for Real?

A Closer Look at the 1990s Knicks

November 15, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

I’ve been reading Paul Knepper’s great new book on the 1990s Knicks.  Paul was kind enough to give us a an extensive interview a few months ago and we examined the compelling story lines.  Reading his book got me to wondering about looking back at some of the details of that run.  How do the advanced stats of those teams compare with the prevailing narrative of the 1990s Knicks?  I thought we could take a look.  (By the way, you should definitely buy the book!) The … [Read more...] about A Closer Look at the 1990s Knicks

Q&A With Paul Knepper, Author of “The Knicks of the Nineties”

August 31, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

In October 2020, Paul Knepper is releasing his first book, The Knicks of the Nineties, a comprehensive look at the characters and stories that made a great era of New York hoops.  Paul did exhaustive research of old articles and interviewed scores of the people who were there, to revisit some of the crazy moments from the second best period in Knicks history.  Paul also fills in some of the gaps in the story that we didn’t have at the time.  Previously, he covered the Knicks for … [Read more...] about Q&A With Paul Knepper, Author of “The Knicks of the Nineties”

Rick Pitino and the Knicks: A Portrait in Dysfunction

October 5, 2017 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

The scandal in Louisville related to a pay-to-play scheme looks like it could finally end Rick Pitino's long and diverse career.  Wherever he has gone, Pitino’s successes have been trumpeted and his failings (personally and professionally) have been equally spectacular.  Rather than review Pitino’s whole career, we thought it would be interesting revisit his time with the Knicks.  This was a brief stop but Pitino really packed in some highs and one low.   Pitino won quickly in New York but left … [Read more...] about Rick Pitino and the Knicks: A Portrait in Dysfunction

NBA 2013 Preview: Eastern Conference

October 31, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

In the post-Jordan Bulls NBA the East has been inferior to the West. That will continue this season and into the foreseeable future. The West is full of smart, creative GMs who can quickly make a bad team good. The East roster of GMs is full of guys in their 2nd or 3rd stints in the job. They are often ex-players who have experienced more failures than successes in their executive careers. They continue to draft and trade their teams into the lottery and hope for a big score there. They’re the … [Read more...] about NBA 2013 Preview: Eastern Conference
