Can LaMelo Win ROY?

March 27, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

LaMelo Ball’s recent wrist injury likely ends his season with 41 games played.  He has been the best rookie this season but does his abbreviated season disqualify him from contention?  Well, that really depends on how good the competition is.  In this particular case, most of the other rookies who have played have had dubious value.  Let’s run through the stats of all rookies with at least 1,000 minutes played so far: -Ball, 41 gms, 1,174 mins, 15.9 ppg, .451 FG%, .528 … [Read more...] about Can LaMelo Win ROY?

A Closer Look at the 1990s Knicks

November 15, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

I’ve been reading Paul Knepper’s great new book on the 1990s Knicks.  Paul was kind enough to give us a an extensive interview a few months ago and we examined the compelling story lines.  Reading his book got me to wondering about looking back at some of the details of that run.  How do the advanced stats of those teams compare with the prevailing narrative of the 1990s Knicks?  I thought we could take a look.  (By the way, you should definitely buy the book!) The … [Read more...] about A Closer Look at the 1990s Knicks

Q&A With Paul Knepper, Author of “The Knicks of the Nineties”

August 31, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

In October 2020, Paul Knepper is releasing his first book, The Knicks of the Nineties, a comprehensive look at the characters and stories that made a great era of New York hoops.  Paul did exhaustive research of old articles and interviewed scores of the people who were there, to revisit some of the crazy moments from the second best period in Knicks history.  Paul also fills in some of the gaps in the story that we didn’t have at the time.  Previously, he covered the Knicks for … [Read more...] about Q&A With Paul Knepper, Author of “The Knicks of the Nineties”

Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

March 30, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

With indefinite malaise upon us, we turn back in time again and ask a hypothetical question: Would anyone have beaten the 1993-94 Bulls if Michael Jordan had not retired? As a brief recap, the Bulls had two separate three-peats, from 1990-91 to 1992-93 and, again, from 1995-96 to 1997-98.  In each case, the Bulls were not as strong by the third year of the three-peat, which suggests that the task of a four-peat (or more) would have been unlikely.  To demonstrate the diminishing returns, … [Read more...] about Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?
