Revisiting The Barkley Rockets: Was He Worth It?

September 8, 2023 by Harlan Schreiber

As we are in the depths of the NBA off-season and waiting for a couple of big names to (maybe) be traded, I thought this would be a good time to review an old controversial big trade: The Rockets’ trade of Charles Barkley in the summer of 1996.  Houston traded two key young players (Sam Cassell and Robert Horry) for a 33-year old Barkley in a bid to squeeze another title out of the Hakeem Olajuwon/Clyde Drexler core.  The trade didn’t win Houston a title but was it a bad deal?  … [Read more...] about Revisiting The Barkley Rockets: Was He Worth It?

Revisiting Pippen’s Bad Days

July 15, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

Thanks to Scottie Pippen’s recent statements, we now to get to revisit the 1990s yet again.  Pippen, who apparently has a book and some other stuff to promo, told Dan Patrick and GQ that Phil Jackson’s decision to choose Toni Kukoc to take the final shot of Game 3 against the Knicks in the 1994 playoffs was “a racial move to give [Kukoc] a rise.”  At the time, Pippen refused to go back into the game and Kukoc did hit the shot for the win. Pippen and Kevin Durant also had an extended … [Read more...] about Revisiting Pippen’s Bad Days

Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

March 30, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

With indefinite malaise upon us, we turn back in time again and ask a hypothetical question: Would anyone have beaten the 1993-94 Bulls if Michael Jordan had not retired? As a brief recap, the Bulls had two separate three-peats, from 1990-91 to 1992-93 and, again, from 1995-96 to 1997-98.  In each case, the Bulls were not as strong by the third year of the three-peat, which suggests that the task of a four-peat (or more) would have been unlikely.  To demonstrate the diminishing returns, … [Read more...] about Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

How Did We Get Here? A Review of 1990s NBA Free Agency

June 23, 2019 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In about one week, NBA free agency will be upon us.  We are already being deluged with rumors, innuendo, and recruiting anecdotes.  This year, there are some huge names on the block, notably Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Jimmy Butler.  We are hearing stories about Irving buying a home in New Jersey (where he is from), as proof that he’s locked into the Nets.  Durant is even more of a mystery, with his serious injury, his spats in Golden State, and the desperation of the Knicks … [Read more...] about How Did We Get Here?
