Chris Childs v. the Nets

January 5, 2016 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Most fans, me included, hate it when legal issues affect the game on the court.  Still, these lawsuits can create a nice little record of a place and time and remind us of what was (see our review of Donald Sterling’s legal travails).  Periodically, we find from some nice little time capsules that we have all forgotten.  By popping up some of these old bubbles, we sometimes can have a little fun and learn a bit players’ careers on the court too. Such is the case with a forgotten lawsuit filed … [Read more...] about Chris Childs v. the Nets

Markieff Morris and Throwing in the Towel

December 29, 2015 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

This week, the Suns suspended Markieff Morris for throwing a towel at coach Jeff Hornacek while on the sideline during a loss to Denver.  There has been much frustration to go around between the Suns poor start this year and Morris’ pre-season trade demand after his brother Marcus was traded to Detroit.   Coaches and players fight all the time but the dreaded towel toss usually pops up when things are particularly messy.  Does the towel toss really mean things are really so dire?  Maybe.  … [Read more...] about Markieff Morris and Throwing in the Towel

1.  Back In My Day, Part 50: Charles Barkley is a fun character.  He isn’t stupid but shoots from the hip with his opinions and can say things that sound right but sometimes aren’t.  On the subject of whether the current Warriors could beat the old Michael Jordan Bulls, Barkley said the following on ESPN Radio:  “The Bulls team would kill this little team….Who is going to guard Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan?  What about Dennis Rodman?...[The Bulls] would love playing the way the Warriors … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

1995-96 Bulls v. 2015-16 Warriors, a brief look

November 27, 2015 by Harlan Schreiber 1 Comment

With the Warriors off to an incredible start the natural inclination is to compare the Warriors to some of the All-Time greats.  Could the Warriors beat the best of All-Time?  This kind of hypothetical question isn’t really answerable but hypotheticals are fun.  If we are going to go down that road, there are really two ways to assess the issue.  First, compare the teams’ dominance of their peers.  The second is to run through a lineup dream matchup and make educated guesses about the how the … [Read more...] about 1995-96 Bulls v. 2015-16 Warriors, a brief look

1. Slow Pacers and Mahinmi’s Shooting: At the end of a ponderous 2014-15 season, Larry Bird and the Pacers decided there needed be changes in style of play. In the context of whether the Pacers wanted big man Roy Hibbert next year, coach Frank Vogel said that “there’s a possibility that Roy’s role will be diminished, if we’re trying to play faster and trying to play smaller.” The Pacers then just gave Hibbert away for a second-rounder after the season. The trade made sense. Hibbert’s offense had … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

Marcelo’s Bad Day

November 12, 2015 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Basketball, like most sports, has a strong element of machismo. The winners are considered alpha dogs and any single bad play can give a player a stigma as goat or a loser for a lifetime. Lakers’ 32-year old rookie point guard Marcelo Huertas had a stigma moment the other day against the Heat. Huertas’ stat line wasn’t terrible. In 15 minutes, he shot 1 for 3, with two rebounds, four assists, (but three turnovers) and scored a +8 in a game where the Lakers lost 13. Of course, sports fans … [Read more...] about Marcelo’s Bad Day
