Atlanta Hawks  5/28    Name Rick Sund general manager 6/17    Sign coach Mike Woodson to contract extension  Atlanta has been a weird a dysfunctional organization for a while now.  How does Mike Woodson survive but GM Billy Knight get the axe?  One would think that Knight and Woodson, having been together for so long, were tied to the same train.  Actually, Knight apparently made several appeals to ownership to can Woodson during the season.  Knight was ignored and Woodson led the Hawks … [Read more...] about Transactions 5/17-7/9

Quick Thoughts

1.    Champs and D:    We've taken a step back from the season thanks to Ed Weiland's excellent draft coverage but now it's time to take a quick look back at the Celtics' run.  In the end, the Celtics excellent defense coupled with the inability of the Lakers to match up with Paul Pierce gave Boston another banner.  Indeed, the Celts' were the best defensive this year (number one in points allowed per minute), but this serves as a nice jumping off point to test the old adage that "defense wins … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

1.    Celtics Take Control:    One of the fun things about writing about sports is that we can chew the scenery a little bit and really delve into some points that aren't mentioned on the television or in the newspapers.  After something like Game 4 of the Finals, there really isn't too much to say.  The Celtics played great defensively and did just enough offensively, thanks to James Posey and Eddie House, to comeback and put the Lakers in a huge whole.  While it is easy to bash the Lakers for … [Read more...] about Playoff Thoughts

1.    Boston Beaning:    With the outlier of the Detroit series, the Finals appear to have mirrored Boston other playoff series quite a bit.  The Celts are playing like a formidable 66-win team at home.  They've controlled most of the first two games, with the exception of the Lakers flurry at the end of the Game Two.  So far, the difference in the series really has been Paul Pierce, who has 26 ppg on .615% and is shooting 7-8 from three.  Throw in the fact that Ray Allen has been more efficient … [Read more...] about Playoff Thoughts

1.    Lakers-Celtics...blah...blah...blah:    Did you hear?  The Lakers and playing the Celtics and they may have even met before.  We've all touched on the history of the Lakers and Celtics and such.  ESPN.com and Classic Sports have been all over this story, giving us all a chance to re-live the old series.  Last time, we cursorily explored how the Lakers and Celtics have met 10 times in the Finals, with the Bill Russell Celtics beating the Lakers all seven times they played and Magic Johnson … [Read more...] about Playoff Thoughts

1.    L.A. Land:    The Lakers impressively dispatched the Spurs to make their first NBA Finals since they lost to the Pistons in 2003-04.  It's hard to figure why the Lakers were able to excel this entire series, winning easily in two games and erasing big Spurs leads in the other games.  In the end, the Spurs had no answer for Kobe Bryant and couldn't muster enough points to stave off the inevitable Laker runs.  Going forward, no matter who wins in the East, we will have a historical … [Read more...] about Playoff Thoughts
