Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

March 30, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

With indefinite malaise upon us, we turn back in time again and ask a hypothetical question: Would anyone have beaten the 1993-94 Bulls if Michael Jordan had not retired? As a brief recap, the Bulls had two separate three-peats, from 1990-91 to 1992-93 and, again, from 1995-96 to 1997-98.  In each case, the Bulls were not as strong by the third year of the three-peat, which suggests that the task of a four-peat (or more) would have been unlikely.  To demonstrate the diminishing returns, … [Read more...] about Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

Revisiting SI’s 1995-96 Fearless NBA Predictions

March 23, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

Having time off from everything give us time to mess around with random things that pique our interest.   Digging deeper into old NBA stories fits that bill.  With the NBA season in hiatus, I thought we could re-examine some old seasons/issues and try to have some fun that way.   Today, I randomly ran across an NBA preview for the 1995-96 season from Sports Illustrated.  The thing that caught my eyes was an article by Hank Hersch entitled, “10 Fearless Predictions,” that took some guesses on … [Read more...] about Revisiting SI’s 1995-96 Fearless NBA Predictions

Real Life Intrudes on NBA

March 18, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

It’s hard to really process all the problems the U.S., and the world, are suffering and may continue to suffer for the foreseeable future due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Life will eventually return to normal but when that happens is anyone’s guess.  Through this lens, thinking about the future of the NBA seems as trivial as can be.  Nevertheless, part of getting through these tough times is by avoiding being consumed by the negative.  I’m not advocating that we pretend the current COVID-19 … [Read more...] about Real Life Intrudes on NBA

Charles Oakley v. James Dolan: A Closer Look At Mutual Destruction

February 22, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

This week a federal judge dismissed a civil action filed by Charles Oakley against James Dolan and the Knicks.  This caught my attention because I didn’t know Oakley had filed a lawsuit against them.  I did recall Oak getting thrown out of a Knicks game for nebulous reasons a few years ago.  Now, with the dismissal, I thought we could do a little post-mortem of the actual lawsuit and what it tells us about Oak and the Knicks. The Incident On the night of February 8, 2017, the Knicks’ … [Read more...] about Charles Oakley v. James Dolan: A Closer Look At Mutual Destruction

All-Star Game Quick Thoughts

February 14, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

1. All-Star Game Stat Trend Update: Adam Silver’s attempts to tweak the All-Star Weekend make sense.  The game is beyond stale and this point.  It is harder and harder to care about this showcase when the effort on defense does not meet the basic baseline of caring.  Two years ago, we reviewed the All-Star stats and documented the steady decline in defense (which wasn’t so hot years ago but is now putrid), as well the rise in the three-point shot attempts. Well, the 2018-19 All-Star game … [Read more...] about All-Star Game Quick Thoughts

The Kobe FAQ

February 5, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

It’s hard to fully process the terrible circumstances surrounding Kobe Bryant’s death last week.  Yes, there are other tragedies in the world that are worthy of note (as well as eight other people, including young children who died with Kobe) but this was horrid on many levels.  Rather than dwell on this terrible part of his story, I thought this would be a good time to do a detailed FAQ (as we have with a bunch NBA greats who have retired), remembering his story and some of the forgotten … [Read more...] about The Kobe FAQ
