Rick Carlisle: Can You Go Home Again?

June 28, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

The Pacers recent hiring of Rick Carlisle as coach fascinates me.  By all accounts, he’s a pretty good coach and, divorced of any backstory, his hiring by the Pacers is totally rational.  He’s a seasoned professional on a team that has struggled to get the most out of relatively solid talent.  What interests me is the fact that Carlisle is a prodigal son returning to town. By way of quick backstory, Carlisle had an interesting prior reign in Indiana.  In 2003, he was hired … [Read more...] about Rick Carlisle: Can You Go Home Again?

The Webber/Nelson Feud Revisited

January 2, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

James Harden’s recent unhappiness in Houston is likely taking them to the point where they will have to trade their megastar under duress.  This isn’t the first time a big star has held a franchise hostage and forced a trade that would likely get a below market return.  The situation gives me a little déjà vu regarding Chris Webber’s departure from Golden State.  The situations were materially different (Webber was much younger and was coming off of his rookie year) but the broad … [Read more...] about The Webber/Nelson Feud Revisited

A Farewell to Barnes

December 13, 2017 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

This week, Matt Barnes officially announced his retirement from the NBA.  Barnes’ retirement announcement was his typical defiant self: “Love me or HATE ME, I DID IT MY WAY!"  Barnes wasn’t really a good enough player to merit our usual FAQ treatment but his career was unique enough to at least take the time to go through a few bullet points to review his memorable moments: -Barnes came out of nowhere:  Barnes wasn’t the biggest underdog in the world but his story is pretty nice.  Barnes went … [Read more...] about A Farewell to Barnes

Nellie Revisited

May 31, 2005 by Harlan Schreiber

It's only been about two months since Don Nelson stepped down as Maverick coach and retired.  At the time, I had wanted to go through his long and interesting career.  The hassles of everyday life prevented me from really going through Nellie's career at the time but I have regrouped am ready to go.  It isn't necessarily timely to be doing this now, with the playoffs raging and Nellie already fading into the background but a career as interesting as Nelson's is really something … [Read more...] about Nellie Revisited
