Quick Thoughts

1.    The Cavs Make Me Want To Puke: Before the season, I thought that the Cavs looked like the clear worst team in the NBA.  I was pleasantly surprised to Cleveland get off to a respectable start at 7-9, only to go 1-34 run since and be in the throes of a 25-game losing streak.  Could the Cavs really be this bad?  In a word...yes.  This is the worst offensive and defensive team in the NBA  Their best player is Ramon Sessions, a decent guard, and the only other above-average player right … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

Charlotte Bobcats 12/22    Fired Larry Brown and named Paul Silas interim head coach Did Brown deserve to be fired?  The answer to this question really depends upon how you define success.  Objectively, Brown was successful in Charlotte.  He took a weak roster and turned them into a competitive team and a playoff team.  The Bobcats handed Brown mostly crap and he got the players to play.  In terms of acquisitions/transactions, the roster was systematically eroded of talent since … [Read more...] about Transactions 12/21-1/16

1.    Good Player, Bad Team: Pretty much the only news in the NBA these days is the perpetually pending trade of Carmelo Anthony to the Nets.  There are compelling reasons for both the Nets and Nuggets to get this trade done but some have questioned why Anthony would want to go to a lottery bound Nets team when Denver is a pretty good team already.  The speculation has surrounded the fact that Anthony wants to return to the East Coast where he grew up and where his wife can pursue a … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

1.    Spuriffic: The best team in the NBA right now by both conventional win-loss, and SRS is the Spurs.  The Spurs actually don't have the best point-differential in the NBA (at +8.8 the Spurs are second to the Heat, who have +9.4).   Going into the season, the conventional wisdom was that the Spurs were pretty good but a little long in the tooth.  I viewed them as a potential contender if the Lakers faltered but no more likely to win the West than several other good teams.  The … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

Atlanta Hawks 12/3    Signed Damien Wilkins Not much upside in this move but Wilkins is still quasi-useful as a bench player.  Wilkins can help the Hawks at the wing, particularly defensively.  The more surprising thing is that this Wilkins (son of former Knick Gerald Wilkins and nephew of Hawk Hall-of-Famer Dominique Wilkins), is now almost 31 years old.  If that didn't make you feel old, Gerald is already 47 and uncle Dominique is now 50.  Hopefully, Damien is careful because … [Read more...] about Transactions: 11/20-12/20

Shinnless In New Orleans

December 13, 2010 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

The interesting news story in the NBA the last week is the NBA's purchase of the Hornets from George Shinn.  David Stern confirmed the purchase/takeover on December 6, 2010 but declined to state how much it cost to buy out Shinn, though Stern did confirm that "has been valued in excess of $300 million."  The NBA will sit on the Hornets until a buyer can be found.  I thought we could breakdown the NBA/Shinn deal because what hasn't been said speaks volumes about the mercurial tenure … [Read more...] about Shinnless In New Orleans
