Revisiting MJ v. Isiah and The Walk-Off

May 5, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

As our global purgatory continues, Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” documentary has masterfully dredged up old stories that we can reconsider.  As we previously noted, much of what has been covered is already well-known by older fans but is new to the younger generation.  One of the new stories is Jordan’s 30+ year rivalry with Isiah Thomas and the Pistons.  Let’s talk about the apex of their lingering resentments, the Pistons’ walk-off without shaking hands with the Bulls in the … [Read more...] about Revisiting MJ v. MJ and the Pre-Pippen Bulls

April 26, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

With no new basketball to watch, the new ESPN documentary “The Last Dance” has brought a lot of attention, again, on the Michael Jordan Bulls.  The documentary is ostensibly about the 1997-98 Bulls and Michael Jordan’s final title run that ended with an amazing shot over Bryon Russell and a clutch strip of Karl Malone to cinch the game.  (It will probably focus less on that one playoff game where B.J. Armstrong and Dell Curry lit the Bulls up).  So far, the documentary is not … [Read more...] about MJ and the Pre-Pippen Bulls

Jordan v. Stackhouse in DC: Who Was Better?

April 12, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

Without regular basketball to watch, the rest of the NBA world gets to the backwards looking that is usually reserved for sites like this one.  A fascinating issue was dredged up recently by Jerry Stackhouse, who told Adrian Wojnarowski’s Woj Pod, that Stack resented his time playing with Michael Jordan on the 2002-03 Wizards.  The money quote from Stackhouse, transcribed via Bleacher Report: "[h]onestly, I wish I never played in Washington and for a number of reasons. ... Things were still … [Read more...] about Jordan v. Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

March 30, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

With indefinite malaise upon us, we turn back in time again and ask a hypothetical question: Would anyone have beaten the 1993-94 Bulls if Michael Jordan had not retired? As a brief recap, the Bulls had two separate three-peats, from 1990-91 to 1992-93 and, again, from 1995-96 to 1997-98.  In each case, the Bulls were not as strong by the third year of the three-peat, which suggests that the task of a four-peat (or more) would have been unlikely.  To demonstrate the diminishing returns, … [Read more...] about Would Anyone Have Beaten Jordan In 1993-94?

The Kobe FAQ

February 5, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

It’s hard to fully process the terrible circumstances surrounding Kobe Bryant’s death last week.  Yes, there are other tragedies in the world that are worthy of note (as well as eight other people, including young children who died with Kobe) but this was horrid on many levels.  Rather than dwell on this terrible part of his story, I thought this would be a good time to do a detailed FAQ (as we have with a bunch NBA greats who have retired), remembering his story and some of the forgotten … [Read more...] about The Kobe FAQ

The End of Craig Hodges’ Career

March 21, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In the last year, Craig Hodges, former NBA guard, wrote an engaging book his NBA career in the 1980s and early 1990s called “Long Shot,” describing his attempts to build a career and how his social activism may have ended career early.   I caught an excerpt of Long Shot and Hodges set a picture where asserted that, as a player on the original Bull Threepeat, he felt that there was collusion to end his career prematurely based upon the social activism. In the book, Hodges wrote that, after the … [Read more...] about The End of Craig Hodges’ Career
