A Quick Look at Peak SF Advanced Stats

October 24, 2021 by Harlan Schreiber

A few days ago, we did a tweet thread on the career advanced stats for the SFs who made the top 75 and those that likely narrowly missed.  I had a couple of requests for how these players rated at peak. So,  I took the 3 best consecutive years for each of the players.  I also added Bird, Durant + Dr J for comparison/context (did not use ABA Erving).  Anyway, here they are:  -Bird 1984-87: 26.2 PER, .242 WS48, 9.0 BPM, 25.7 VORP -KD 2011-14: 28.2 PER, .275 WS48, 9.0 … [Read more...] about A Quick Look at Peak SF Advanced Stats

HOF Review: Atlantic Division

June 14, 2020 by Harlan Schreiber

Over time, I have become less enthused about the concept of choosing Hall of Famers.  The exercise of trying to perfectly quantify the order of entry into the Hall of Fame of outsiders seemed somewhat futile.  The tipping point to me was Dennis Johnson.  I thought his qualifications were borderline and expressed that position.  Shortly thereafter, DJ died before he ever learned of his induction.  I know my analysis had no impact in Johnson missing the honor but it made … [Read more...] about HOF Review: Atlantic Division

Quick Thoughts

1. Whither Melo?: Carmelo Anthony’s quick exile from Houston has put his future career in limbo and raised questions about his future and his past.  Recently, Kirk Goldsberry wrote a thoughtful piece for ESPN that made the point that Melo’s strengths, creating mid-range shots one-on-one and posting up, are obsolete in today’s NBA that emphasizes ball movement and three-pointers.  Goldsberry further notes that Anthony’s antiquated style can’t work because, even at his peak, Melo’s trueshooting … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

Trae Young and Three-Point Futility

November 25, 2018 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Time to check in on Trae Young, the player who was considered a Stephen Curry clone last year in college. So far, as a rookie, Young has looked like he has some uses as a playmaker in the NBA.  At age 20, he has been a nice passer but the shooting has been bad.  Young has shot a decidedly un-Curry .226% from three on 5.6 attempts per game so far.  That sounds bad but how bad is it?  Here is the list of the worst shooting three-point chuckers who have taken at least four threes per game (in over … [Read more...] about Trae Young and Three-Point Futility

Transactions: The Melo Deal

September 23, 2017 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Knicks trade Carmelo Anthony to the Thunder for Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott, and a 2018 second round pick What to make of the Carmelo trade?  In assessing the Carmelo Anthony trade, it’s hard to separate the return from how the Knicks handled Anthony to begin with.  Phil Jackson did his best to alienate and criticize Anthony in hopes of forcing him to accept a trade.  The actual result was that the Knicks totally destroyed much of the perceived value that Melo had.  Instead, Anthony was … [Read more...] about Transactions: The Melo Deal
