NBA Draft Update

May 22, 2009 by Ed Weiland 1 Comment

This is the quickie, post-lottery mock. I was actually hoping the T’wolves would win the lottery. They were the only potential winner that might have brought some drama to the top pick. But it went to the Clippers who actually might take advantage of this opportunity to end the futility that’s been the trademark of the franchise since leaving Buffalo. I want to say again that the weakness of this draft is pretty much limited to the big men. The perimeter players are actually a pretty deep group. … [Read more...] about NBA Draft Update

NBA Draft Update

April 29, 2009 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2009 draft remains shaky. I wouldn’t call it historically bad or anything like that. It suffers for two reasons. The first is it follows two pretty strong drafts. Most drafts would look weak compared to the ’07 and ’08 crops. The next is it’s strength is in wing players. Breaking the ’09 talent pool down into three basic groups of bigs, wings and points, I would say the bigs are extremely weak, the wings are strong and the points are slightly below average. The result of this will be many … [Read more...] about NBA Draft Update

NCAA Tourney Preview

March 19, 2009 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

In picking the NCAA tournament winner, and the final four teams, one important factor has stood out in recent years. Teams with the best big men do well. Not the big men who win college POY awards, but the big men who will be drafted in the top ten. There are other important things. It’s good for the backcourt to have as many good players as possible and a good coach is a nice thing to have. But the main thing is having a strong inside game. Going back the last 7 years, it’s clear that the teams … [Read more...] about NCAA Tourney Preview

NBA Draft Update

March 11, 2009 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Right now a good historical reference as to how the 2009 draft turns out might be the 1989 draft. This draft was weak at the top, but had some pretty good guards chosen later in round one. That’s a little how I think this one will end up. The draft is void of can’t-miss types, but is deep enough with wing players that I’m sure a sleeper or three will emerge from later in the draft.  I’ll list the prospects as I did last month. I feel it’s best to look draft prospects in this order: … [Read more...] about NBA Draft Update

NBA Draft Update

February 8, 2009 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

After two of stronger, deeper drafts ever, the 2009 draft is going to be fairly normal. There are no can’t miss stars and the best player, Blake Griffin, is more of a hard worker than a great athlete. This is mainly due to a weak freshman class. The sophomores who stuck around from last years’ incredible class are by themselves a more impressive group than the ‘09 freshmen. That means the winners from the 2009 draft are going to be players who stayed in school for another year, because they’ll … [Read more...] about NBA Draft Update

NBA Preview 2008-09: Projected Records

October 31, 2008 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This season I predicted the records a little differently. I still used the same process of taking production from the previous 2 seasons and adjusting for things like age and circumstance. The difference is I gave myself more latitude to change records that just looked wrong. I did this because things can change during the season. Last year two trades, one silly the other sensible, changed the balance of power in the West. So while the Cavs may not be as strong as the Pistons and Celtics right … [Read more...] about NBA Preview 2008-09: Projected Records
