NBA Draft Update

March 7, 2008 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Another update on the prospect rankings I’ve been doing each month. For many of these players this will be fairly close to their final ranking, as they will play in only a few more games. Others, especially players who have missed significant time due to injury, could improve or decline fairly dramatically. Right now the draft is shaping up as a fairly mediocre one. There are only a few players who I would call solid choices, in the sense that I’m pretty certain at this point that they’ll make a … [Read more...] about NBA Draft Update

NBA Draft Update

February 12, 2008 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This is an updating of the player rankings I did up at the end of January. A few quick notes on these rankings: There’s a maximum of 40 points in this system. The rankings are based entirely on statistics. The statistics used are different for each position. I don’t make any allowance for player ages, so freshmen and sophomores will have more room for improvement than juniors and seniors. The number isn’t meant to be a final ranking, just a reflection of how each player stands up statistically … [Read more...] about NBA Draft Update

A Look At NCAA Prospects So Far

January 9, 2008 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This past summer I came up with a numerical ranking system for college prospects. The systems ranks players stats compared with those that previously successful prospects did well in. The rankings are done differently for each position, but only in the sense that different stat categories are considered. The system gives a maximum of 40 points. Any player above 35 should be considered a likely future star. From 30-35 is a potential star and at the very least a player who should make the league … [Read more...] about A Look At NCAA Prospects So Far

What November Means

December 2, 2007 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The first full month is in the books. I’m going to look at what a teams’ conference rank on 11/30 has historically meant and what it means for teams in 2007-08. Here’s a look at each seed at the end of play on November 30th and how well they’ve continued to play. This table goes back to the 1983-84 season, when the current 16-team playoff format began. The column on the left is the team rank on 11/30. The row across the top indicates the final standings. The numbers in the chart show … [Read more...] about What November Means

NBA Preview 2007-08: Most Improved Player

November 7, 2007 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Who wins the Most Improved Players award? Typically it’s scorers. The winner has usually upped his scoring average by at least 7 PPG to the high teens or low 20s. The winner also tends to be a younger player, in his 2nd or 3rd season. Team success and position played have little to do with who wins this award. This award has been somewhat of a surprise the last 3 seasons, with few experts having spotted winners Simmons, Diaw and Ellis. Any player whose season has a “whoa, where did … [Read more...] about NBA Preview 2007-08: Most Improved Player

NBA Preview 2007-08: Rookie of the Year

November 2, 2007 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This award usually goes to the top scoring rookie, regardless of team record or how valuable a player the rookie is. Before I get into any individual players, I want to mention that I believe this will be one of the great draft classes ever. Even without Oden the group is loaded with talented players. I’m also guessing we’ll see more good players coming out of round 2 than in any draft since 1986. Sometime in January there will be articles appearing on-line and in magazines touting … [Read more...] about NBA Preview 2007-08: Rookie of the Year
