How Did We Get Here? A Review of 1990s NBA Free Agency

June 23, 2019 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In about one week, NBA free agency will be upon us.  We are already being deluged with rumors, innuendo, and recruiting anecdotes.  This year, there are some huge names on the block, notably Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Jimmy Butler.  We are hearing stories about Irving buying a home in New Jersey (where he is from), as proof that he’s locked into the Nets.  Durant is even more of a mystery, with his serious injury, his spats in Golden State, and the desperation of the Knicks … [Read more...] about How Did We Get Here? May 19, 2019 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Tyreke Evans has recently been suspended for two years for violating the NBA’s drug policy for use of a non-performance enhancement substance.  The perception of drug use of NBA players has changed quite a bit over the users.  It was a huge issue in the 1970s and 1980s when many articles speculated that hard drug use was a pervasive problem.  The perception and the NBA drug policy has evolved.  Initially, the NBA’s prime goal was to show the public that it would not tolerate drug use.  Over … [Read more...] about Tyreke Evans and Lifetime Suspensions in the NBA

Why Isn’t T-Hard In The Hall?

March 27, 2019 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Recently, Tim Hardaway gave an interview to HoopsHype where he asserted that he hasn’t been voted into the Hall of Fame for non-basketball reasons: “the reason I'm not in is because of what I said in 2007 about gay people. That's why I'm not in right now, and I understand it. I hurt a lot of people's feelings and it came off the wrong way and it was really bad of me to say that.”  Hardaway was appropriately conciliatory about his past comments and seems to accept that basis for not getting into … [Read more...] about Why Isn’t T-Hard In The Hall?

NCAA Tourney NBA Style

March 24, 2019 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In the honor of the start of the NCAA tourney, we thought we could take a brief look at the All-Time starting five for each of the 68 tourney teams, ranked by their NBA career accomplishments.  A few prleims: -We know it is sort of antithetical to rank by NBA career when college accomplishment can be very different than NBA accomplishment (see, for example, Christian Laettner versus Kyrie Irving at and after Duke). -In putting together a team, if two players are close, college … [Read more...] about NCAA Tourney NBA Style
