AC For Three

February 6, 2008 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

One of the fun things about the NBA season is when something total anomalous and unexpected happens.  Sometimes, the anomaly is so subtle that people miss it.  To me, Anthony Carter's 2007-08 season falls in that subtle anomaly category.  Carter is having a career year in terms of minutes and scoring, though for a career year it's not that far above his production in Miami in that late 1990s and early 2000s.  The difference is that the nature of Carter's value is very different than it was … [Read more...] about AC For Three

Transactions 1/16-2/1

Charlotte Bobcats  1/31    Sign Earl Boykins  Tough summer for Boykins, who turned down a $3 million option with the Bucks in search of a better situation and a long term deal.  It didn't quite work out that way, as Boykins had to sit out half the season and ends up with $1.1 million for high trouble.  It wasn't a crazy decision for Boykins to opt out at age-31.  He was playing at about the same level for the past five years so he won't be any more marketable next summer unless he really … [Read more...] about Transactions 1/16-2/1

Quick Thoughts

January 26, 2008 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

1.    Big Win In SA:    A few weeks ago, we examined the New Orleans Hornets' hot start to determine how real it is and how likely it is to continue.  We concluded that the Hornets were pretty good but that staying on 55-60 win pace didn't seem realistic.  Since that time, however, the Hornets have only stepped up their play, going 9-1.  Most impressively, the Hornets absolutely destroyed the Spurs last night in San Antonio by the score of 102-78.  The Spurs were at full force too, with all … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts

All-Star Analysis

January 22, 2008 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Yes, I detest the All-Star game and haven't watched it in years and I don't usually read the All-Star pick columns either.  Still, I can't deny there is some appeal to chew the scenery on the process.  So here's my take on this year's voting:  East Starters Guards, Dwyane Wade and Jason Kidd: It's always funny that the writers and the coaches seem to detest rewarding good players on bad teams.  I understand the syllogism: good player = good team, therefore, bad team = bad player, or at the … [Read more...] about All-Star Analysis

Cleveland Cavaliers  1/14    Sign Mike Brown to a contract extension  Despite the early rumors that he was in trouble, Brown got the extension he had been requesting.  Brown's contract was set to expire after 2008-09 and it would have created quite a bit of controversy to let the coach that led them to the Cavs to their only Finals appearance to twist in the wind as a potential lame duck.  In short, it would make a really bad atmosphere to have when the real goal is keeping LeBron James … [Read more...] about Transactions 12/29-1/15

A Look At NCAA Prospects So Far

January 9, 2008 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This past summer I came up with a numerical ranking system for college prospects. The systems ranks players stats compared with those that previously successful prospects did well in. The rankings are done differently for each position, but only in the sense that different stat categories are considered. The system gives a maximum of 40 points. Any player above 35 should be considered a likely future star. From 30-35 is a potential star and at the very least a player who should make the league … [Read more...] about A Look At NCAA Prospects So Far
