Draft 2013: A Look at the Shooting Guards

June 11, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Last week I looked at the top SGs. This piece looks at the rest of the SG field. This is actually a pretty strong SG group when we include Oladipo, McLemore and Caldwell-Pope. This group of SGs has every type. There are the 2nd and 3rd tier prospects that some team may foolishly talk themselves into as early as the late lottery in Jamaal Franklin, Allen Crabbe and Tim Hardaway Jr. There are 5th-year seniors who finally clicked in DJ Seeley and Charles Carmouche. There are a couple of young … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: A Look at the Shooting Guards

Draft 2013: Top Shooting Guards

June 7, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The NBA has gone through a dry spell when it comes to young SGs.  Since Dwyane Wade came into the league in 2003, Brandon Roy and James Harden have been the only SGs to make a major impact and Roy’s career ended prematurely. That could change this year. The 2013 draft features 3 of the better SG prospects I’ve seen in a few years. Victor Oladipo, Ben McLemore and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope all enter the draft with solid prospect numbers, but also some bust potential. McLemore has been at the top … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: Top Shooting Guards

Draft 2013: Small College Guards

May 30, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The success 2013 Rookie-of-the-Year Damian Lillard had coming into the NBA out of Weber State has put more of a spotlight on small college guards. Lillard in 2012 marked the 5th consecutive year a small college guard has had a major impact. Starting with the 2008 draft class George Hill, Stephen Curry, Jeremy Lin and Norris Cole all came into the league from a small college and have had a big impact.  While I generally loathe questions like: “Who will be this year’s Damian Lillard?” the fact … [Read more...] about Draft 2013: Small College Guards

Would Hibbert Have Mattered?

May 23, 2013 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In one of the more amazing games of the playoffs, the Pacers almost knocked off the Heat at home.  Up by one point, with 2.2 seconds left, the Pacers were faced with how to best defend the Heat.  As we all know now, the Pacers chose to sit Roy Hibbert and play Sam Young, a perimeter defender, instead of their big shot blocker.  Would Hibbert have made a difference?  Maybe…Let’s take a look at the final play and see what we can gleam: -The Heat had Shane Battier inbound the ball near half … [Read more...] about Would Hibbert Have Mattered?

NBA Draft 2013: The Lesser PGs

May 21, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

I already took a look at Trey Burke and Michael Carter-Williams, who are the top two PG prospects this year. My next piece after this one will cover a trio of small college guards, CJ McCollum, Nate Wolters and Ray McCallum, who I wanted to look at separately. This group is what you might call the lesser PGs. These players have shown enough for a mention, but come up short as prospects. These are the type of prospects with whom I have to pick through stats to convince myself they’re serious … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2013: The Lesser PGs

A Closer Look At Eric Murdock

May 20, 2013 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Two of the biggest stories basketball stories of the last two months are the firing Mike Rice at Rutgers for abuse and the recent commitment of newest high school basketball prodigy Andrew Wiggins to Kansas.   While these stories seemingly have little common ground, old school NBA enthusiasts will recognize 1980s and 1990s players figured in both stories (Eric Murdock and Mitchell Wiggins). The man behind the Mike Rice story is former point guard Eric Murdock.  Murdock was director of player … [Read more...] about A Closer Look At Eric Murdock
