The Roy Tarpley Saga

August 26, 2009 by Harlan Schreiber 5 Comments

Roy Tarpley's NBA career has been closed for 14 years and his subsequent lawsuit against the NBA was also recently closed.  What is forgotten was how great a player Tarpley was when he was healthy.  I thought we could take a look back at Tarpley and his lawsuit against the NBA and see what exactly happened before, during, and after Tarpley's fall from the NBA and see if a re-examination now yields some new perspective. The College Years Tarpley started out as a center at college with … [Read more...] about The Roy Tarpley Saga

Hey all.  As you can see, we've gone ahead and moved Hoops Analyst into the 21st century.  Though still a work in progress, we think you'll enjoy the new site much more than the old.  We've added the ability to leave comments, which should add a whole new dimension to our posts and foster a little more discussion with our readers.  Currently, we only have a few of the most recent posts up here, but we will be providing a way to archive the articles from the old site very soon.  Please leave some … [Read more...] about The New Hoops Analyst

Re-Considering Wayman

May 19, 2009 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

In the last few weeks, the NBA has lost a few interesting characters.  The particularly untimely passing was of Wayman Tisdale, the former power forward, who had a decent NBA career after a storied college career.  I was actually pretty surprised to see so many nice articles about Tisdale, whose pro career was not great.  The near consensus of all the stories I saw was that Tisdale was a great and affable guy, a talented musician, and decent pro (and a great collegian).  I thought I'd take a … [Read more...] about Re-Considering Wayman

NBA All-Time Rankings, 2008-09 Update

April 17, 2009 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

One of our favorite exercises is trying to place the most recent happenings to NBA history.  In order to help us in that regard, Kyle Wright, who wrote the excellent book "NBA From Top to Bottom" has passed on his 2008-09 update.  Just to give you a little context, Kyle has ranked every NBA and NFL ever from first to last.  The list is based upon his formula, which identifies several factors, including point differential, strength of schedule, and various other factors.  It measures each team … [Read more...] about NBA All-Time Rankings, 2008-09 Update

NCAA Tourney Preview

March 19, 2009 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

In picking the NCAA tournament winner, and the final four teams, one important factor has stood out in recent years. Teams with the best big men do well. Not the big men who win college POY awards, but the big men who will be drafted in the top ten. There are other important things. It’s good for the backcourt to have as many good players as possible and a good coach is a nice thing to have. But the main thing is having a strong inside game. Going back the last 7 years, it’s clear that the teams … [Read more...] about NCAA Tourney Preview

Top Heavy NBA

February 20, 2009 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

Most believe that NBA title contention is likely limited to Boston, Cleveland, and the Los Angeles Lakers.  I was just checking out Basketball-Reference's cool playoff probability reports, which essentially confirm all of our hunches on this point.  As of right now, each team of these teams has about the same chance of winning the title (with Cleveland a little bit higher on the totem pole).  Moreover, each team is projected to win at least 63 games.  Assuming everyone stays healthy, all three … [Read more...] about Top Heavy NBA
