NBA Draft 2014: Marcus Smart and Elfrid Payton

June 4, 2014 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Smart and Payton are the two top college PGs available in the 2014 draft. While the mysterious Dante Exum could exceed them both, when looking strictly at college players, Smart and Payton stand well above the crowd. The reason is both are young and both hit the important statistical benchmarks that most stars have hit. The big marks both players hit are .500 on 2PP while scoring 20+ P40 and an RSB40 over 9.0. As long as there are no other red flags like high turnovers or accomplishing this feat … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2014: Marcus Smart and Elfrid Payton

NBA Draft: Top 60 Post Tournament

April 15, 2014 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This final top 60 includes only seniors and underclassmen listed as at least 50-50 to declare on Chad Ford’s list. So until next year I bid adieu to Denzel Livingston and Delon Wright. I look forward to seeing you both drafted in the 2015 lottery. The 2014 draft is shaping up as a perimeter heavy draft. After Embiid and possibly Clint Capela, there are no real good prospects at the 4 or 5. This could become one of the great drafts ever for small forwards though. It is a very deep draft at the … [Read more...] about NBA Draft: Top 60 Post Tournament

NBA Draft 2014: Top 60

March 6, 2014 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

As the NCAA season cruises towards the tournament, the draft picture remains muddled after Joel Embiid at the top. What is clear is that assuming most of the draftworthy players head to the pros, the 2014 draft should be a pretty good one. This class is very deep on the perimeter and should deliver solid prospects deep into round one. 1.       Joel Embiid, C Kansas: Centers who come in as freshmen and put up a .600+ 2PP, double digit R40 and 4.0+ B40 become legendary NBA players as long as … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2014: Top 60

Carter-Williams and Smart emerge as the top 2013 PG Prospects

November 29, 2012 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

One thing I’ve written about extensively is the importance of posting a high RSB40 for guard prospects. That’s combined rebounds, steals and blocks per 40 minutes. My rule is any college PG who posts an RSB40 over 7.0 while also showing an ability to pass and score efficiently is a solid NBA prospect. Any college PG who posts a RSB40 under 6.0 will usually struggle in the NBA, regardless of his other numbers. Had the Timberwolves followed this rule, they wouldn’t have drafted Jonny Flynn in 2009 … [Read more...] about Carter-Williams and Smart emerge as the top 2013 PG Prospects
