A Look at Dante Exum

November 19, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Dante Exum is an Australian guard who is being touted in the mocks as being right there with Wiggins, Parker and Randle as a player worthy of being the top overall pick in the legendary 2014 NBA draft. It is still a long time until the draft and a lot will change at the top before June. I wanted to take a look at Exum to decide whether he’s a legit top 5 prospect or if he’s just another flash in the pan riding an impressive high school all-star game performance and an imposing wingspan to … [Read more...] about A Look at Dante Exum

It is Early, But…

November 13, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

Actually I don’t think it is too early to start breaking down the legendary 2014 draft class. Everyone else is on it, so I might as well jump in and join the fray. I may wait a decade or three before doing a 2014 comp with the classes of ’84, ’96 and ’03 though. My MO has always been to wait until January for my first look at the draft class. But this group is clearly different. Last night’s Champions Classic was so much fun, not even Dick Vitale could ruin it. So let’s join the fun and engage … [Read more...] about It is Early, But…

West Preview: Predicting Records

October 31, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The West is very good this year. Only Phoenix seems to be a lottery certainty. There are more elite teams in the West and more promising, young teams. This should be quite a year. Pacific Division 1. LA Clippers 52-30 2. Golden State Warriors 46-36 3. Phoenix Suns 25-57 4. LA Lakers 24-58 5. Sacramento Kings 20-62 The 2014 season will not be a good one for division named after oceans. The Suns are clearly in tank mode. The Kings have made the choice to build around Boogie … [Read more...] about West Preview: Predicting Records

East Preview: Predicting Records

October 31, 2013 by Ed Weiland 1 Comment

This is the much lesser of the two conferences. This has been the case for what seems like forever. This year the East seems likely to be Tank Central as the vast majority of the anticipated Andrew Wiggins derby will involve teams from the East. If Miami runs away with the top seed again, the drama in the East might be focused more on the bad teams. Of course it first has to be determined if Wiggins is really everything they say he is and These record projections are based on player … [Read more...] about East Preview: Predicting Records

An Early Look at Wiggins, Parker and other Top Freshmen

July 10, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2014 draft class is already being called one of the strongest in years. We’ll see on whether that becomes the case, but it seems promising. The two most talked about players have been SFs Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker. In December of last year Jabari Parker landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the caption, “The Best High School Basketball Player Since LeBron James is Jabari Parker.” That was some heady praise, but Parker quickly became yesterday’s news when Andrew Wiggins … [Read more...] about An Early Look at Wiggins, Parker and other Top Freshmen

2013 Draft Grades

June 28, 2013 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This may have been the most entertaining draft ever. There was drama, plot twists, comedy and surprises. We got David Stern basking in the glory of his 30 years as the best commissioner in sports. We got the entertaining ESPN crew actually giving some critical analysis. We got Shane Battier auditioning for his post-playing career. That was fun. My MO is to grade on a curve with 3 As, 6 Bs, 12 Cs, 6 Ds and 3 Fs. I try to focus on what exactly was gained by the first round pick in the draft, … [Read more...] about 2013 Draft Grades
