NBA Draft 2014: The UCLA Guards

June 2, 2014 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The 2014 draft will be one of the best in years. There will be a lot of good stories, but the most interesting one to follow over the next decade might be the UCLA prospects and how they all turn out. There are 3 Bruins likely to be drafted, Kyle Anderson, Jordan Adams and Zach LaVine. Anderson is one of the most unique prospects I’ve seen and a very difficult player to rate. I’ll cover Anderson later, but here I wanted to look at the two UCLA SGs and the interesting contrast in style and … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2014: The UCLA Guards

What’s The Top Pick Worth?

May 27, 2014 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

The Cavs how now won the NBA lottery for the third time in four years.  This record of success at picking ping pong balls has led some to question whether this shows that the system is broken.  Bill Simmons responded with a column arguing that the Cavs’ win proves the problems because “[f]or me, this was about the failure of rewarding a relentlessly incompetent organization.” I understand the sentiment that the NBA shouldn’t be rewarding failure but I think this misses the point.  Why should … [Read more...] about What’s The Top Pick Worth?

The Sterling Saga

May 8, 2014 by Harlan Schreiber 1 Comment

We have all had a few days to digest the entire Donald Sterling Affair.  Now that the emotions have calmed down a little bit, this is a good time to re-examine what exactly happened and whether, upon review, it all turned out as it should.  There is no doubt that Donald Sterling is a contemptible human being but is there more to this story?  Let’s take a look… The Basic Facts The story, as we all understood it was that Sterling was secretly recorded by a personal assistant telling her that … [Read more...] about The Sterling Saga

Can the Heat Match the ’93 Bulls?

April 21, 2014 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

The ’91 Bulls were a team that needed to win a championship. They were coming off consecutive Eastern Conference finals losses to the champion Pistons the previous 2 seasons.  In Michael Jordan they had the league’s best scorer. While Jordan wasn’t the reigning MVP, going into the season he was considered at least the equal of the reigning MVP, Magic Johnson. What Johnson and Larry Bird had that Jordan didn’t was championships. At the time there were whispers that the Bulls couldn’t win a title … [Read more...] about Can the Heat Match the ’93 Bulls?

2013-14 Playoff Preview

April 18, 2014 by Harlan Schreiber Leave a Comment

As usual, we reach the end of another interesting season with the same reaction: thank god it is finally over, now let's get to main event already!  At the outset, the 2013-14 season finds us, for the first time in awhile without a clear cut favorite.  Conceivably, there are six teams with a credible shot of winning the title. Unlike the previous three seasons, LeBron James' presence does not make his team a prohibitive favorite.  So, that's a fun change.  Let's jump in and look at the … [Read more...] about 2013-14 Playoff Preview

NBA Draft: Top 60 Post Tournament

April 15, 2014 by Ed Weiland Leave a Comment

This final top 60 includes only seniors and underclassmen listed as at least 50-50 to declare on Chad Ford’s list. So until next year I bid adieu to Denzel Livingston and Delon Wright. I look forward to seeing you both drafted in the 2015 lottery. The 2014 draft is shaping up as a perimeter heavy draft. After Embiid and possibly Clint Capela, there are no real good prospects at the 4 or 5. This could become one of the great drafts ever for small forwards though. It is a very deep draft at the … [Read more...] about NBA Draft: Top 60 Post Tournament
